Create two broadsides: one for a sans serif typeface and
one for a serif typeface.

Format

• Two 420mm x 594mm posters, vertical/portrait.

• Posters must be presented as a pair.

What is a broadside?

A device used to acquaint clients with a typeface. Allows users to encounter typeface “in the flesh”.

Constraints

• Only use one typeface family per broadside

• All angled elements must be at a 90 degree relative to any other angled type

Required elements:

• Name of typeface

• Name of type designer

• • Alphabet sample (upper case and lower case)

  • Numbers 0-9

  • Ligatures

  • Two paragraphs about the typeface

  • One character as illustration

  • Only two colors, shades and tints allowed, white not included

First Draft

Create three variations of each typeface in black and white.

I chose Bodoni and Avenir.

First Critique

• ALL of your layouts are very successful! 

• The capital Q (diagonal) layout is probably the most interesting

Final Iteration

In my final iteration I decided to continue with the diagonal style poster for both typefaces.

Afterthoughts

I’m really happy with the colors I used for these broadsides and enjoyed the challenge of making two posters share the same look and feel while maintaining their individuality. Working within specific constraints helped me refine and develop this design.

What I would have done differently

The body text is a bit difficult to read due to insufficient contrast with the background. I would've repositioning the text or using different colors to improve readability.
